B Corp is a holistic, independent and rigorous certification. It is awarded to businesses following an evaluation, categorised into five key areas of impact: governance, workers, environment, community and customers. More than just a label, B Corp is a real movement led by a community of over 9,000 businesses across the world (over 130 of which are Swiss) that are committed to having a positive impact on society and the environment. Liip is the latest to join.
Liip was founded in 2007 and is one of the leading Swiss agencies for web and mobile development. The company currently has over 220 employees who work self-organised across its six Swiss offices. Liip creates sustainable social, environmental, and economic value by striving for digital and human progress, which is its very purpose. Liip's motivation to contribute to these three aspects of sustainable development has always been at the heart of its work. As David Jeanmonod, sustainability manager at Liip, stresses, “We are delighted to join this global movement and community created with the same conviction: that the real measure of a company’s success goes beyond the financial aspects and includes its social and environmental impact. Right from the outset, we have been committed to sustainability, absolutely convinced that digital technology has a positive role to play, while keeping in mind that we need to reduce its negative impacts. We know that sustainable development is a process of continuous improvement, and we are very happy to continue on our path, inspired and supported by this strong community. The certification process has already allowed us to identify certain areas for improvement that we hadn’t identified before”.
The B Corp label is delivered by B Lab. This non-profit organisation ensures that businesses meet strict standards in terms of their social and environmental performance, transparency and responsibility. While some well-known B Corps multinationals have joined the movement and taken centre stage, the first companies to adopt the standard were mainly SMEs. As Jonathan Normand, founder and managing director of B Lab Switzerland explains, “Right now, 90% of certified B Corp companies in Europe are SMEs with fewer than 250 employees. These small to medium-sized businesses play a key role in transitioning to an inclusive and regenerative economy. By adopting responsible and sustainable practices, they are charting a path to a future in which economic performance goes hand in hand with having a positive social and environmental impact. For a company like Liip, the B Corp certification represents a milestone, confirming its leadership and commitment to having responsible business practices and a positive impact. With innovation and sustainability at the heart of its model, Liip sees this certification as a recognition of its actions and an invitation to continue promoting the use of responsible technologies. Together, we raise the standards to build a fairer, more sustainable future.”
